Sherman's Civil War: Selected Correspondence of William T. Sherman, 1860-1865 (Civil War America)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (April, 1999)
Authors: Brooks D. Simpson, Jean V. Berlin, and William Tecumseh Sherman
Average review score:

Wonderful glimpse into the mind of Sherman
William T. Sherman was an irascible, unpredictably brilliant man and his letters bring out these myriad traits. He was a fascinating man and his own words illuminate his fiery personality. Sherman's own 1875 memoirs are a mixed bag, marred by an over-abundance of wartime correspondence and ancillary material. This collection of his letters actually makes for more engrossing, instructive reading. We hear his opinions on the major players of the Civil War: Grant, Halleck and Lincoln. We gain an understanding of his tortured relationship with his wife, Ellen, to whom many of the letters are addressed. His visceral hatred of the press and reporters is well represented.

The collection is expertly edited by Brooks Simpson, someone who thoroughly understands both Sherman and the civil war era. The notes are instructive and unobtrusive and the introduction lays the groundwork for appreciating Sherman and his correspondence. This is an outstanding book for anyone who wishes to get to know the erratic and intellectual General who was second only to Ulysses S. Grant in ability and results.

Sherman's March (The Civil War Series)
Published in Hardcover by Time Life (October, 1986)
Authors: David Nevin and Time Life Books
Average review score:

The subjugation of Georgia by Uncle Billy's Union Troops
On Christmas Eve 1864, President Abraham Lincoln received a telegram from General William T. Sherman that read in part, "I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah." The Georgia port city marked the end of Sherman's legendary march from Atlanta to the sea, which is the subject of this volume in the Time-Life Civil War series. Author David Nevin tells in detail how Sherman's army lay waste to Georgia and secured the general's reputation as the Avenging Angel of the Union. But surprisingly, "Sherman's March" actually spends more time covering the battles between Confederate general John Bell Hood and Union general George Thomas north of Atlanta once Sherman's army was on its way to the sea.

The volume begins with a pictorial essay on Sherman and then looks at The Enemies in Georgia, as the Union troops occupied Atlanta and decided what to do next. Swath of Destruction looks at the military and psychological motivations for the infamous march (the lyrics to the equal infamous song "Marching Through Georgia" appear in an illustrated section). The Road to Tennessee looks at how the Confederate army launched a counter invasion of Tennessee once Sherman's troops were out of Atlanta, including the battles of Spring Hill and Franklin. Missed Chance at Franklin details the disintegration of the Confederate army at that battle and their withdrawal after the battle outside Nashville. The Place for Brave Men to Die chronicles the final attacks of Hood's Confederate army against Thomas's Union troops, before turning to Sherman's capturing of Savannah.

"Sherman's March: Atlanta to the Sea" is the final volume in the Time-Life series devoted to the war in the West, following "The Fight for Chattanooga: Chickamauga to Missionary Ridge" and "The Battles for Atlanta: Sherman Moves East." All of these books are illustrated with historical photographs, etchings, drawings, and paintings. Collectively the Time-Life series presents a nice, albeit episodic, approach to the Civil War. I have enjoyed reading (and rereading) them for years.

Sherman's March Through the Carolinas
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (February, 1996)
Author: John Gilchrist Barrett
Average review score:

Civil War enthusiasts should learn about this campaign!
Sherman's March to the Sea is well-known, however his subsequent campaign up through the Carolinas is not. Sherman is widely considered to be the inventor of manuever warfare, and as such this is required reading. It is little known that this campaign continued for 9 days after Appomattox!

The Bible of Civil War books.
This was arguably the greatest book that I have ever read on any topic. Not only was it a great account of General Willie T.'s life, but it also gave great insight into the real meaning of life. If anyone is looking for an answer to anything, then this is the book for you.

The Story of Hanukkah
Published in Hardcover by Penguin USA (Juv) (September, 1989)
Authors: Amy Ehrlich and Ori Sherman
Average review score:

A helpful resource for our mostly Gentile elementary school
I've read this picture book many times over the years to predominantly Gentile elementary students in our school library to help explain the historical events behind the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. The quasi-biblical language used in the text makes this book more effective for older students, from about 4th to 6th grades.

Students familiar with the Bible and the Temple in Jerusalem seem to get a bit more out of the narrative, but it's still necessary to stop and explain terms like Sabbath, idols, pigs, and the month of Kislev.

Ori Sherman's bold colorful paintings are obviously not meant to depict a literal representation of the story line, and the students readily accept them as an artistic interpretation.

In our rural, mostly Gentile, environment, this version of the Story of Hanukkah has been a helpful resource.

Studio Affairs: My Life As a Film Director
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (September, 1996)
Author: Vincent Sherman
Average review score:

Magnificent. One of the very best books about moviemaking.
A cineaste may not treat Vincent Sherman with the same regard usually reserved for Welles, Ford, Fellini, or Godard, but a movie buff remembers and appreciates the underrated Sherman's quiet craftsmanship on many popular Hollywood features. Sherman has been an actor, writer, producer, and director -- an all-around "fixer" who could take a bad project and make it saleable, and a promising project and make it successful. He brings the same practicality, insight, and honesty to this fascinating autobiography.

"Studio Affairs" gives the reader an insider's look at the Hollywood studio system, with its stepping stones and setbacks. Vincent Sherman worked with such luminaries as Jack Warner, Harry Cohn, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth, Claude Rains, even The Dead End Kids. Sherman wore many hats, and he details his varied dealings with actors and colleagues with remarkable candor. His personal life is as compelling as his professional career.

"Studio Affairs" is engrossing reading. On more than one occasion this reviewer intended to spend a few minutes with the book, and was hooked for more than an hour at a time. Vincent Sherman deserves a standing ovation for his work, and for this book. Movie fans should enjoy this book very much indeed.

The Teenage Whore

Author: Brenda Earl Eddie Sherman

not holding back anything- all true
I would like to say that this book is truly for real. Peolpe don't like to think because the truth scares them alot. This books talks about immoral behaviors in all people there no race, no color, no gender- when your living a immoral lifestyle it does not matter who you are. The book talks about how rich, poor , homeless, blue collar/white collar workers it does not matter who you are when your living immorally. The book offers explanation to help you understand the bible. Another good point in this book is the stories that are true and sad. This book also talks about if you are a sociable drinker, sociable drug addict, this is what you are it's time for changes. Brenda gets explicit with sex but like the title I gave it this book is not holding back and it is all true, I believe it. What this book help you with and that is helping yourself, which is what alot of us need to do, get help spiritually not from nobody else but from reading the bible ourself. It is written in all caps I believe because it is all important stuff, there is some lower case. Whether or know this is a important book. I love this book. It's not written in vulgarity, but truth. Kid's who have been out in the streets should read this book. Brenda even challenges you to "change". K. W. Have a nice day!
